Poetry on the Sofa Poems by Joannie Kervran Stangeland
Why a sofa?
Why a sofa? I was sitting in on a conversation about poetry and why it seems to stay out of the pop culture mainstream, and it made me think about television, which is right in the middle of popular culture. Television comes to you in your home. You can relax on the davenport. No going out in the rain. No parking issues. Could poetry do that, too?
I returned to that question recently, and I thought about some of the poems that some of my friends might want to read. For example, the dance poems might not interest everyone and they might not appeal to a literary journal editor, but my dance friends might enjoy them.
I decided that instead of waiting for the long cycles of submission and rejection to maybe resolve into publication, I'd create my own realitymy own space, a place where people could relax and read some of my work. A virtual sofa.
I'll still send some work out and try to get some of my manuscripts publishedbut in the meantime, I hope you enjoy these poems.
