These poems were inspired by the photographs and stories in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, by James Agee and Walker Evans.
The poems here are not about the same people, but they are my attempt to tell that storya story that continues throughout the United States, from the strawberry fields of California to the poultry farms of of the South.
I have never grown cotton. I have never farmed for a living. I wasn't even born yet in the 1930s. But I wanted to tell this story for then and for now.
