Mama Says Don't Worry
Married for Love
Some days I cannot look into his eyes.
The small creases in the corners
have seen it all, know what's coming.
Seven years we've been here.
With our youngest only two
and our oldest barely ten,
we've got some years ahead.
Mama told me he was old for a man,
that I should pin my heart elsewhere
or forget about love
and think about the hard hours
that stack into a year of hunger.
But the look in his eyes was younger then,
and I wanted to stare at them, just stare
and see what they saw.
