Mama Says Don't Worry

Addie, Always Addie

I would lie awake at night
and say my name in my head—Madeleine—
as though I wear silk stockings
and live in New York City or even Paris, France.
I saw pictures in a magazine,
clipped them out when I was little
until Mama found them.
"No good keeping your head in the clouds—
you're like to stumble and break your neck."
So I'm still Addie, always Addie,
my neck in one piece.
